Greenmeadow Primary School

Vision: Respect Ourselves, Grow Together, Learn Forever

INTENT

At Greenmeadow Primary School, our progressive art and design curriculum aims to provide a broad, flexible and exciting learning journey that is relevant to now and the future.  We provide creative and first hand experiences which inspire and challenge all children. This equips them with a sense of curiosity and inspiration to gain new knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We provide a curriculum where skills are taught so they can explore and experiment using different techniques, materials, textures, form, pattern and colour along with expressing their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. Pupils are taught to think critically using inspiration from a range of artists and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design showing cultural awareness and being mindful of promoting positive mental health. Art and design contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation whilst also providing a window into the history of our lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Greenmeadow Primary School, we carefully map the teaching of Art across the year. Art is taught in 3 out of 6 terms, one session per week. Art lessons are practical and teach the children a range of new techniques and skills, which they are then able to use to express their own thoughts and feelings. We aim to provide the children with the opportunities and stimuli to explore styles, techniques and designs of famous artists both modern and classical. We provide lessons that give children a calm space to explore and reflect on the designs of others and where they learn to express their own opinions along with promoting self-evaluation to be seen as a positive technique for supporting self-improvement.

We follow a clear progression of skills which ensures all children are challenged in line with their year group expectation and are given the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge.

All children from Year 1 upwards have their own sketchbook, which will move up the school with them. In this book, they can:

  • Research artists, illustrators, in history – this might include notes, sketches/photocopies/photographs of paintings, landscapes etc.
  • Record observations from the world around them.
  • Record their thinking process as they develop their ideas.
  • Practise, experiment with and develop new techniques and skills they have been taught e.g. Using a pencil/different grades of pencil for line, tone and pattern.
  • Mix colours & experiment with different sized and types of brushes for specific purpose and effect
  • Develop collage skills.
